Julie Ertz makes emotional return

Julie Ertz made her emotional return to football on Saturday after 611 days. She featured for United States of America woman’s soccer team in their latest 2-0 win over Ireland in a friendly match on Saturday. She was introduced as a substitute for Andi Sullivan in the 67th minute.

“It’s surreal. I feel like it’s almost a movie for me with all of these things coming together,” Ertz said after her 23-plus minute cameo postgame.

Her time of the field saw a header on a corner kick just two minutes in, a yellow card for a foul three minutes after the set piece attempt. Later, however, she did play the pass that led to Horan being hauled down for a penalty, and the team’s second goal.

Ertz will be hoping to impress USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski for a spot in Australia and New Zealand this summer.
