Women’s soccer teams will wear purple wristbands in upcoming April international window “in a show of collective solidarity and desire for positive change,” FIFPro has announced.
Canada women’s national team set in motion the movement as they turned-up the pressure on their football association to equalize treatment of soccer players.
USWNT also joined Canada in wearing the wristbands as the fight reached unprecedented heights at the SheBelieves Cup. Elsewhere England took the stand when they performed in the Arnold Cup.
Releasing a statement on the planned action, FIFPro said, “Too often, women’s football players are having to sacrifice or risk parts of their careers to effect necessary change – even though this change centers on basic and fundamental rights such as fair treatment, respect, and equality,” FIFPro said in a statement Thursday.
The union notes progress “at the highest level” has been made recently with FIFA saying it is aiming for full equality for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
“With this commitment ready to be enshrined, FIFPro and member unions will continue to push for and support progress towards equitable conditions at national level for players around the world,” FIFPro said.
FIFPro is a union representing professional footballers with clients all over the world.
