Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall has hit out at VAR and a lack of goal-line technology following their narrow UWCL 1-0 defeat to German side Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Tuesday evening.

Speaking to the media after the match, the 40-year-old said that VAR was not working in the Allianz Arena and went on to question whether their two efforts which were cleared off the line had been denied by lack of goal-line technology.

VAR reviewed two incidents and ruled in favour of the hostesses, one of which was an apparent handball which saw Caitlin Foord’s shot being blocked in the box ealry in the match and another being an apparent pulling of Rafaelle’s shirt in the Bayern box.

“Part of me is proud, part of me is disappointed [that] we can’t be more clinical with our chances,” he said. “Part of me is angry because obviously VAR was not working in the Allianz Arena tonight. It must be someone sitting there not looking at the pictures.

“Because it is clear and obvious [in] those two penalty situations. I think that is unacceptable. There is a pull of a shirt and that handball situation in the first half.

“When we look at this competition, tonight highlights a couple of issues. VAR is only introduced in the quarter-finals, with referees that I don’t know if they have used VAR before tonight. I don’t know.”

The Gunners fell to a 39th minute Lea Schüller header, after which two of their efforts were cleared off the line.

“Goal-line technology is something that you can use at any stage, but it is not compulsory,” he said. “Today it was not in use because Bayern choose not to pay for it.

“Next week at the Emirates, Arsenal have choose to use it, because we think it is fair for the competition. It is a problem for the competition that not every game has the same level of technology.”
