Portland Thorns FC have announced that forward Janine Beckie is out for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL).
The Canadian forward is due for surgery in the coming weeks and will continue her rehabilitation at the Providence Sports Care Center with the help of the club’s medical personnel. The injury will see the Canadian forward miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand set for July.
Confirming the injury, the forward wrote in a Twitter post Friday, “Heartbroken is an understatement. Having worked so hard during the off-season for what was set to be one of the biggest seasons of my career, defending the title for Portland Thorns and of course playing in the World Cup for Canada, being out for an extended period of time is a difficult pill to swallow.”
She thanked the medical teams at both club and country as well as everyone for the support rendered saying, “I’d like to thank the Thorns and Canadian medical teams, as well as everyone their well wishes.”
Janine Beckie promised to her support to teammates for the remainder of the season saying, I’ll be supporting my team-mates for both club and country this season and it goes without saying I’ll be back better and much stronger than ever.”
An influential member of the CanWNT, Beckie has been leading the offensive for better conditions of service for the Canadian women’s soccer team and recently took part in the hearing conducted by the House of Commons.
Several high profile players like France striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Arsenal forwards Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema as well as Spain star Alexia Putellas have all gone down to this injury recently sparking debate on why women are prone to ACL injuries.
