- United fail to break Chelsea hoodoo
Chelsea shot to the summit of the WSL standings after beating valiant Manchester United 1-0 at Kingsmeadow on Sunday afternoon.
Sam Kerr scored the all important goal for the host to give them the advantage in the 23rd minute. The strike was at her menacing best all afternoon, twice denied early on before smashing home from close range after getting to the end of an inviting long ball from Lauren James.
Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps produced an excellent save. United dominated possession all day but failed to create clear cut chances to trouble Ann-Katrin Berger in goal for the hosts.
United had a penalty appeal turned in the 33rd minute referee Cheryl Foster. Nikita Parris went down under contact from Kadeisha Buchanan, but referee waved played on.
The result ensures Chelsea takes a big stride towards a fifth WSL crown in six years as they are now two points clear of Manchester United. Chelsea face Manchester City on Sunday March 26 at the Academy Stadium.
