Ajax and Fayenood played to a 1-1 draw in the historic fixture at Johan Cruyff Arena.
Walking out through the tunnel surely was something of a surreal moment for both sets of players and the game that unfolded at the iconic venue needed that extra spice.
The first half played out to a cagey affair with both teams not giving much away. As the first stanza drew to a close, it became more clearer that the tactics from both teams were to ensure the game remained open and there for the taking.
The second half started livelier with the visitors on the front foot. The renewed energy from the visitors paid of as early as the third minute from the restart when Maxime Bennink broke through from close range.
The goal prompted a quick response from the host who restored parity six minutes later courtesy of a strike from forward Ashleigh Weerden who turned home a Nadine Noordam pass.
Both teams pressed hard for the second goal but to know avail.
The draw ensure Ajax remain second to FC Twente with 37 points from 14 matches. Fayenood remain sixth with 18 points.
