Manchester City recorded a sweet 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the City Football Academy today. City had a superb first half and controlled it after two first half goals from Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly. The visitors were much better in the second half but they were nowhere near good enough.
Yui Hasegawa and Kelly were superb in the middle of the park as they controlled the proceedings. The Japanese international continues to look better with each passing game and looked so composed anchoring the Man City midfield against one of the best teams in the league.
The huge win moved the hosts into the top three of the Barclays Women’s Super League for the first time all season. Arsenal are now without a win in three consecutive matches. Arsenal’s new system of playing a back three looks like not working according to plan. Defenders Lotte Wubben-Moy, Leah Williamson and Rafaelle didn’t look comfortable in that system.
Arsenal might rue their failure to sign goalscorers after losing Beth Mead and Vivienne Miedema due to long term injuries. Now out of top three and with lack of goals as they try to adapt to the new system, Arsenal need to quickly find their mojo back and stay in the hunt. The defeat meant the Gunners now sit five points behind Chelsea and three points behind Manchester United.
Results: Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal (Hemp 3, Kelly 43, Rafaelle 59)
