Attackers Ashley Sánchez and Diana Ordóñez became the first Mexican teammates to score in an NWSL match when their goals guided Houston Dash to their first win of the 2023 NWSL season.

The Houston Dash beat Chicago Red Stars 2-1.

Maria Sánchez found the breakthrough when she tapped home an Ebony Salmon pass to send Houston ahead. Houston’s Natalie Jacob’s scored an own goal in the 18th minute to see Chicago Red Stars restore parity.

Soon after resumption, Chicago defender Tatumn Milazzo was judged to have fouled Dash forward Diana Ordóñez in the penalty area. The Mexican stepped up and buried the spot kick in the bottom left corner despite Naeher picking the right way and nearly getting a glove on the opportunity.

Chicago pressed for an equalizing goal with forward Mallory Swanson leading the charge, but Houston held on with Casey Krueger’s header was cleared off the line by Houston’s Allysha Chapman.
