FIFA has announced a major increase in prize money for this year’s Women’s World Cup.
The development has seen the prize money increase three-fold from what it was in the previous edition in 2019. The amount now on offer stands at USD 150 million up from $30m for the 24-team edition in 2019. Speaking in Kigali where he received a mandate to begin second term as President during the 73rd FIFA Congress, President Gianni Infantino announced that a flurry of changes are on the pipeline to bring parity between the women’s and the men’s game.
He said. “For the first time ever, I [plan to] dedicate a specific portion of this payment, which mainly has to go to football development, but a specific portion of that should go of course to the players.”
He emphasized that equal conditions and services including accommodation and flights, for all men and women playing at a World Cup are key to the plan.
“This will be a reality already for the Cup in 2023, same conditions as for the World Cup ’22 will be for the players and coaching staff in the Women’s World Cup in ’23,” he said.
These changes have come days after FIFPro had registered their concerns on the welfare of female footballers compared to their male counterparts.
