FIFA have accepted defeat in their quest to bring on board Visit Saudi as a key sponsor for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Australia and New Zealand set the tone for a barrage of attack on FIFA after they threw overtures on their intention to get in bed with Saudi Arabia.
Speaking in Kigali, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, “I can clarify that there were discussions with Visit Saudi.”
“At the end this discussion didn’t lead into a contract. How do you say it? It was a storm in a water glass. A storm in a teacup.” Although Infantino tried to play down the effects of the backlash in making the decision, the news strikes as a victory for various stakeholders who spoke against it.
