Haiti in historic 2-1 win over Chile to qualify for first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup

Haiti made history when they qualified for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Chile in in the final qualifying playoffs at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.

French-based midfielder Melchie Dumornay found the opener on the stroke of halftime when she tapped home a Roselord Borgella pass. Captain

Nérilia Mondésir missed a penalty in the 89th minute as Haiti searched for the second goal. Mondésir made amends in additional time as she assisted Dumornay for her second of the night, bringing joy and “a breath of fresh air” to her strife-torn homeland.

Maria Rojas found the consolation goal for Chile soon after but it proved to be too little too late.

The historic victory was enough to ensure Haiti join the 32 team cast for this year’s soccer showcase.
