  • Canada players warmed-up clad in purple as the labour impasse rages on
  • England also wore purple wristbands in their 2-1 win over Italy in support of CanWNT

Recovering from a torrid start to this year’s edition of the SheBelieves Cup, Olympic champions Canada beat Brazil 2-0 in the teams’ second match of the tournament played in Nashville.

With all eyes on them to see how they fared on the back of a flat performance against USWNT amid the ongoing labour dispute, Canada looked more composed and organized as they dispatched  No. 9 Brazil.

Centre back Vanessa Gilles got the opener in the 31st minute when she turned home a Jessie Fleming corner.

The bullet-header was enough to see CanWNT retreat for the breather in front.

Brazil returned from the breather with more purpose and poise, pinning back their opponents for the greater part of the second-half.

Brazil were to be curved open again in 71st minute when substitute Evelyne Viens turned home a Cloé Lacasse for Canada’s second and cushion goal after a pinball-like sequence involving several players in front of goal which resulted in Brazil failing to clear their lines.

With Brazil knocking in search of a goal to keep their opponents within arm’s reach, CanNWT goalkeeper made two important saves in the final 10 minutes to keep Brazil at bay.

The result sets up a feisty final day of the tournament with Canada who occupy second in the standings above Brazil courtesy of a superior goal difference, face Japan and table-toppers USA meet Brazil.
